Your complete guide to scoring high on the EJU Science exam for admission to Japanese universities — the scoring system, subject-by-subject breakdown, and 5 golden tips from our teacher.
For the science track, the EJU is built on a total of 850 points.
Total score
Made up of three parts: Japanese, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences. In Sciences you choose 2 of the 3 subjects — Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Japanese
Reading · Listening · Writing
Mathematics
Course 1 or Course 2
Natural Sciences
Physics 100 · Chemistry 100 · Biology 100 (choose 2)
The EJU uses a precise method called Item Response Theory (IRT).
Not all questions carry equal weight — points vary based on answer statistics and difficulty.
A difficult question that few people answer correctly is worth more points.
An easy question most people get right is worth relatively fewer points.
This system balances the difficulty of each year's exam and grades every candidate fairly. So focus on increasing the number of questions you answer correctly.
Based on global average statistics, here is roughly how the number of correct answers translates into points.
| Correct answers | Score earned |
|---|---|
| 8 – 10 questions | ≈ 50 – 60 pts |
| 12 – 14 questions | ≈ 65 – 75 pts |
| 16 – 18 questions | ≈ 80 – 90 pts |
| 19 – 20 questions | ≈ 95 – 100 pts |
| Correct answers | Score earned |
|---|---|
| 8 – 9 questions | ≈ 55 – 65 pts |
| 12 – 13 questions | ≈ 70 – 75 pts |
| 15 – 16 questions | ≈ 80 – 90 pts |
| 18 – 19 questions | ≈ 95 – 100 pts |
About 19 questions in total. Mechanics and electromagnetism make up the majority of the score.
力学 · Mechanics
The biggest topic! It covers 6-7 of the 19 questions, so it deserves the most attention.
電磁気 · Electromagnetism
The second-largest topic. Together with mechanics it makes up ~70% of the score.
波動 · Waves
A medium-sized topic where steady points are within reach.
熱 · Thermodynamics
Few questions, but memorizing the formulas earns reliable points.
原子 · Atomic Physics
Usually just 1 question. Solidifying the basics is enough.
Chemistry has four core areas: theoretical, physical, inorganic, and organic.
物質の構造と状態 · Structure & State
Structure and state of matter. The alphabet of chemistry — the foundation for everything else.
物質の変化 · Physical Chemistry
Changes of matter. Dominated by calculation problems that require mathematical logic.
無機化学 · Inorganic
A 100% memorization area. Review it regularly for guaranteed points.
有機化学 · Organic & Polymer
The most important, point-rich area! Master the reaction mechanisms.
Mechanics + Electromagnetism = 70%
Mechanics and electromagnetism together make up ~70% of the physics score. So spend 80% of your prep time on these two topics and focus your energy where it pays off most.
Skip strategically to maximize your score
Instead of getting stuck on one hard question and wasting time, secure the easy questions first. Maximize your total score through smart skipping — time is your most valuable resource.
Use logic, not just memory
Boldly cross out impossible answers: an object's speed can't exceed the speed of light, reaction pressure can't be negative, energy can't be negative, and Acid + Water ≠ Base. Filtering wrong options with logic gets you to the right answer fast.
Let the units guide your formula
Forgot the formula? Look at the units! Force [kg·m/s²] = Mass [kg] × Acceleration [m/s²]. The units of each quantity guide you to the correct formula.
1% better every day
Following the Japanese principle of Kaizen, make a little progress every day. Improving 1% daily leads to enormous results by year's end. Consistency matters more than talent.
